This information has recently been updated, and is now available. 10/24/2024 10:59 AM EDT Matthew Miller, Department Spokesperson The United States is today sanctioning Mirghani Idris Suleiman (Idris), a senior leader of the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF). As Director General of the U.S.-designated Defense Industries System, the SAF's primary weapons production and procurement arm, Idris has led its efforts to procure weapons and expand the war. The Sudanese Armed Forces have prioritized weapons acquisition, including procuring drones from Iran and Russia, rather than heeding calls for peace. These deals included a port-for-weapons exchange with Russia, escalating the brutality of SAF's war with the Rapid Support Forces (RSF). This costly war has featured widespread attacks on civilians and public infrastructure. More than 11 million Sudanese people have been displaced and over 21 million face acute hunger. The Sudanese people deserve peace, justice, and a return to civilian government. Today's action follows our October 8 sanctions on the RSF senior leader and procurement director Algoney Hamdan Daglo Musa. They form part of our continued efforts to promote accountability for those fueling this conflict. The United States will continue to use the tools at our disposal to push for peace and impose costs on those perpetuating the conflict and suffering of the Sudanese people. The Department of the Treasury actions were taken pursuant to Executive Order 14098, "Imposing Sanctions on Certain Persons Destabilizing Sudan and Undermining the Goal of a Democratic Transition," as amended. For more information on today's action, see Treasury's press release. |
