Under Secretary Zeya Travels to Algeria and Egypt 11/15/2024 07:13 PM EST Office of the Spokesperson HomeUnder Secretary Zeya Travels to Algeria and Egypt hide Under Secretary Zeya Travels to Algeria and Egypt Media Note November 15, 2024 Under Secretary of State for Civilian Security, Democracy, and Human Rights Uzra Zeya will travel to Algiers, Algeria, and Cairo, Egypt from November 17-21, 2024, to engage on humanitarian cooperation across the Middle East and Africa, human rights, and partnership to fight trafficking in persons and illicit narcotics. In Algiers, Under Secretary Zeya will engage on stability, security, and prosperity in North Africa and the Sahel. She will underscore U.S. support for fundamental freedoms, including of religion or belief and expression; safe, orderly, and humane migration management; and cooperative efforts to address trafficking in persons and advance counternarcotics cooperation throughout the region. Under Secretary Zeya will be joined by Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs Assistant Secretary Barbara Leaf. In Cairo, the Under Secretary will emphasize the strong U.S.-Egypt partnership, including on human rights, as well as U.S. support for Egypt's generous hosting of refugees and asylum seekers from regional conflicts. She will advance our joint efforts to address humanitarian crises in Gaza and Sudan and meet with a range of government, civil society, and international organization partners. She will be joined by Bureau of Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor Deputy Assistant Secretary Christopher Le Mon.
